Our group studies atomic origins of various condensed matter physics phenomena using scanning probe microscopy. Low-dimensional electron systems in graphene and topological insulators reveal symmetry-protected topological phases. Quantum mechanical phase transitions may be induced and detected in a strongly correlated systems , including high temperature superconductors. Single atomic spin states may be controlled and detected by spin-polarized tunneling electrons. These observations may open a door towarda new direction in condensed matter physics.
